August news

August 2019 News

Last month:
17 members enjoyed a hour and a half walk discovering the squares of Clifton and Hotwells spotting plaques about the major and minor celebrities who lived there . As well as  historical surprises there were also some geographical ones - such as the steps up to Canynge Square and the steps down to Hope Square.  The walk ended with well deserved refreshment at the Pumphouse, by the river.
Coming up: "Knowing You, Knowing Your WI, aha!"
This will be a social evening of fun games and games; getting to each other and more about the WI.  What to know more?  Come along on Wednesday and find out!
If quizzes are your thing then how about getting a team of four for the Avon Federation Quiz on Thursday 17th October (7pm -10pm) at Somerset Hill, The Precinct, Portishead? Please note the closing date is Tuesday 3rd September. Val, our secretary, will be happy to provide more details at August's meeting.
Denman College Bursary Raffle
From August's meeting until the draw at the October meeting you will have the opportunity to buy raffle tickets for generous bursaries for Denman College. The lucky winner will receive a voucher for £360 (which covers most 2 day courses) and the "runner up" a  voucher for £150 which covers a one day non-residential course. This is an ideal opportunity to enjoy the Denman experience.  If you want to know more about courses on offer then visit https://www.denman.org.uk/courses. There will also be brochures to peruse at the meeting. Please note there will be no cash alternative.
Avon Federation Events
It's good to see that the many and varied events advertised in Avon News are attracting interest.  Some events, however, prove more popular than others and when they are oversubscribed a ballot takes place.. This means that not everyone who signed up for an event will be successful.  Val, our secretary, will now have a list with the names and contact details of those who have signed up.  Should we be allocated fewer tickets everyone will be contacted to see if they still wish to attend.  If no one drops out then ticket(s) will be allocated in the order on Val's list.  Hope this all makes sense!
Durdham Downs Group
Brislington WI are hosting a September Sausage Sizzle on Sunday 8th September at 12.30 at 5th St Lukes Scout Hut, Brookside Road, Brislington BS4 4JS in aid of Feed the Homeless Bristol.  It's £5.00 per plate - meaty and veggie options available.
From your Committee
UrgentGood news - we have two new members for our committee. They both came along to one of our committee meetings and decided  to join us. We would really like at least two more people, so if you are interested, please talk to any of us or come along to a meeting and see what it’s like.
Christmas Party: A date for your diary Wednesday 11th December.  We hope to be able to confirm the venue soon with tickets on sale at the September meeting.
