Social Groups

Social Groups are only open to current WI members

As you can see, we have a wide variety of member-led subgroups. It is a great way to get to know one another.

Please contact us at our email indicating which subgroup interests you thecliftonwi@gmail.com.

Please note: By committing to a paid event, members assume responsibility for relevant payments, whether or not they actually attend the event. Organisers will try to find another member to use and pay for tickets, but WI regulations are strict on bookings and payments. Clifton WI cannot cover any shortfall that arises.

CULTURE

Book Group

Our book group meets the first Tuesday of the month at a member's home. We read a wide variety of genres, and have a lively discussion over snacks and drinks! Contact Ann Pulteney for more information on joining the fun.

Theatre Group

Paulene organises tickets for plays, ballet, musicals and other dramatic events in Bristol. If you want to hear more about future shows, or if there is a local production that you would like to suggest, contact Paulene Denyer to discuss all things theatrical.

GAMES & HOBBIES

Bridge Group

We have a very friendly group who play ACOL bridge on a regular basis. The group all strive to improve play, but essentially enjoy the social and intellectual interactions which bridge offers. Current play is on Zoom/Bridge Base Online (BBO) on Mondays at 4.30pm and Wednesdays at 7.30pm, except for the 1st Wednesday of the month, which is in person. Novice players are welcome, but the ladies are unable to offer tuition. Contact Helen Bowen for your bridge-related queries.

Mahjong Group

The group is thriving under the leadership of Jan Hamilton and Patsy Rose. We play in the afternoons, and welcome new and experienced players. Get in touch with Jan or Patsy if you want to try your hand at mahjong!

The Game Birds

Our Board and Card Games group is a regular and popular drop-in meeting at Channings Pub in Pembroke Rd, fortnightly on a Tuesday at 2.30pm. Volunteers bring a different game for the group to learn and enjoy along with a chance for a chat. Contact Eli Whitaker for further details.

Knit, Stitch, & Chat

A group for all things sewing, stitching, purling, and crocheting! The ladies meet on the last Friday of the month to work on individual projects while having a chat. Needlecraft novices are welcome to join and receive instruction from this friendly group. For more information, contact Catherine Elsey.

EATING

The Early Birds

This group takes advantage of early-bird dining offers, meeting once a month. Always a lovely, social evening with some delicious meals in restaurants around Bristol! Contact Ruth Thompson for future dates.

The LoCaLs (Ladies of Clifton at Lunch)

Eli Whitaker organises monthly Thursday lunches at a variety of restaurants around our beautiful neighbourhood of Clifton. Spots are usually snapped up quickly, so contact Eli for further details and dates.

Dining Group

This group visits boutique, independent restaurants anywhere in Bristol on a monthly basis. It's always an exciting and wonderfully social evening with these women! Contact Sally Meadows or Cheryl McKeon for more information.

EXCURSIONS and ADVENTURES

From time to time we arrange group outings to a place of interest. Past trips have included a visit to Arnos Vale for a themed guided tour, a dive into the towers at Clifton Suspension Bridge, and a tour of Clifton with a focus on notable local characters!

If you have any suggestions about a visit, which could be absolutely any place or event of interest anywhere within day-trip distance, do please email thecliftonwi@gmail.com.
